The recurring Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since 2005 has taken the lives of thousands of the strip’s residents. 10 years ago, Israel launched a major attack on the strip (dubbed as ‘Operation Cast Lead’), killing 1391 Palestinians, among them 454 children and women. Three of them were the daughters of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish: Bessan (21), Mayar (15) and Aya (13). They were killed by a shelling from an Israeli tank on their house, while Dr. Abuelaish was corresponding with an Israeli TV channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UxJWdCwOpc).
Ever since this tragic event, Dr. Abuelaish sought to make Israel legally accountable for this crime, and continued his work to promote human rights and peace. He is the author of the book “I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity” (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2011). Now living in Canada, Dr. Abuelaish created a foundation called “Daughters for Life” in memory of his three daughters (http://daughtersforlife.com).
We are honoured to have the opportunity to host Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish at Café Palestine on 7 February at 19h. Dr. Abuelaish will share with us his thoughts on the state of affairs in Gaza and in Palestine, then and today, his personal trajectory, and his uncompromising efforts to seek a better future.
